Home battery more than profitable

Smart Metering makes home battery more than profitable.

Research by energy company Zonneplan shows that 88% of solar panel owners favor a home battery purchase subsidy. This is despite the recent price drops. Moreover, Zonneplan shows that home batteries are actually more than profitable. Not only by increasing self-consumption, but especially by trading on the energy market. Data is the new gold.

1100 euros.

Zonneplan shows that a 20kWh demo battery can generate as little as 1100 euros in about six months. This by contributing to a more stable electricity grid and trading on imbalance prices. The current coalition plans to end the balancing scheme Jan. 1, 2027, and should this go through, the above becomes a different story. From then on, it will be smart to focus more on self-consumption. Thanks to a home battery and good monitoring, consumers can more than double their self-consumption.

Smart Monitoring.

To get everything out of solar panels, adequate monitoring of yields is important. Especially if feed-in returns will hardly yield anything in the future due to the abolition of the balancing scheme. In this scenario, a home battery is the attractive option to store the free solar power for self-consumption. Two in three solar panel owners are very positive about a home battery in the future, the survey shows. Purchase costs (47.5%) and uncertainty about the expected payback period (23.2%) appear to be the biggest (unnecessary) stumbling blocks.
